·      What question about the reading for today did I prepare before class?

o   Why do they think there was only two kinds of psychology?

·      What key ideas did I hear in seminar today?

o   Munsterberg’s dual conception= belief there are two legitimate but different kinds of psychology: one causal and objective, emphasizing deterministic and mechanistic responses to stimuli, and another that is purposeful and subjective, requiring psychologists to enter into and share their subject’s particular thought processes and points of view. Allport wondered if there was a way to fuse the two kinds.

o   Manifest motivation is motives not caused by the past but by present moments

o   Gorden and Floyd realized no systematic overview of personality and the unifying concept of personality studies was focused on individual traits: habitual patterns of behavior, temperament,
intelligence, sociality, and emotion that differentiate one person from another

o   Talked about recent events that matched to lesson.

·      What did I learn today that contributed to my understanding of psychology?

o   They proposed a general model for personality composition, consisting of four traits under the general headings of Intelligence, Temperament, Self-Expression, and Sociality. Gordon’s dissertation tested this model and demonstrated a potential for a systematic approach to research on personality
